Need for Speed Underground 2 holds a special place in the hearts of Need for Speed fans. It’s a game that has fan videos crying out for a remake, and even though the licensing issues surrounding Underground 2 would likely make any remake prohibitively expensive for EA, that doesn’t stop fans from dreaming. Or in the case of one fan, from just doing it themselves.

2Unreal4Underground is the name of a very unofficial Need for Speed Underground 2 remake in Unreal Engine 4. The YouTube account got started roughly six months ago after Take-Two put a stop to the unofficial San Andreas remake project. With very little likelihood of EA sending a cease and desist, the German programmer went to work importing Underground 2 into Unreal.

It started with building the test track, GUI, and importing Underground’s car models. Then came collision boxes, sound effects, and implementing the iconic soundtrack, which in the case of 2Unreal4Undergroun, has grown to include all of Need for Speed Underground, Underground 2, and Most Wanted.

Regular progress updates on the channel reveal how far this project has come. Cars, lighting, sounds, physics, and the drift meter are all there, and in the most recent video, the whole of Bayview has returned. Lighting, atmospheric effects, reflections, and textures all get a serious upgrade thanks to Unreal Engine 4.

2Unreal4Underground is still far from a one-to-one remake of the original. Nitrous was recently added, but the in-game menus, car customization, campaign mode, and multiplayer are all still missing. There’s also work still to be done getting the arcade racing feel of Need for Speed Underground 2 just right. But as you can see in the video, it certainly looks like a Need for Speed game. Let’s just hope EA doesn’t shut this project down with a cease and desist letter.

In other Need for Speed news, the next game is being made by Criterion Games, the makers of Most Wanted. A reveal is expected this November for current-gen consoles only, while the game itself will feature “photo-realistic” cars and “anime elements.”
