Given the recent release of Mario Kart Tour, a mobile racing game based on the classic Mario Kart franchise, it's clear that Nintendo's handheld properties can have a home in the world of mobile gaming. And no title in the Nintendo catalogue would work better than Nintendogs. In a world with a serious dog obsession and smart phones that are more advanced than ever, a Nintendogs mobile title almost makes too much sense.

The Virtual Pet Phenomenon

Nintendo released the original Nintendogs on the Nintendo DS back in 2005, and the game was a smash hit. Players were given the opportunity to adopt dogs, name them, train them, walk them, enter them in skills competitions, go on play dates and much more. Seeing as virtual pets have been relevant ever since the Tamagotchi released back in 1997, the concept of adopting and raising your own dogs on a Nintendo DS was wildly popular, and it would most certainly work even better on a mobile platform.

New And Improved Nintendogs

The technology of today's smart phones is far beyond that of the Nintendo DS, and a Nintendogs mobile game could certainly be the best title the series has seen. Today's touch screens can easily allow you to pet and interact with your dog, and even teach it a few tricks. Voice command capabilities will allow you to call your dog by name and give it commands, and present day AR technology could even allow you to take photos of your virtual pet within your living room.

The step-counting and location technology available in today's phones sets the stage for interactive dog walks, where your pet can find treats and other gifts just as it was able to in the original. Instead of going on a virtual walk with your pet like you did in the DS days, you'd be encouraged to actually go outside, where you'd be rewarded for your walking with various treats and cosmetic items for your dog. There's even the possibility of interactive play dates with other players. Overall, the technology of today's phones can provide for a new and improved Nintendogs.

Doggo Mania

Let's face it, not only would a Nintendogs mobile game work great with the technology of today's phones, but there is one huge reason why the game would be highly marketable as well - people absolutely love dogs. From memes, to viral videos, to full-blown celebrity dogs, the pet is probably the most popular and adored animal in human history, and it seems as if people can never get enough of them.

Due to the massive popularity that comes along with anything that has to do with dogs, the game will have a great chance at appealing to those who normally don't even play mobile games. You don't need to be a gamer to find interest in raising your own virtual pet, and the game would have all of the appeal of being a pet owner without any of the responsibility.

Bad Microtransactions, Bad!

The biggest problem that people have had with today's mobile games like Mario Kart Tour is the absurd way in which microtransactions are implemented. Although the games are free-to-play at first, they become bogged down by the necessity to spend money in order to gain meaningful progress, which eventually turns players away.

Nintendogs mobile game will most definitely contain microtransactions, but they don't necessarily have to be as poorly implemented as we've seen recently. A great example of how to handle microtransactions within a mobile game can be seen in Pokémon GO. Even though the popular Pokémon game is the most profitable mobile title right now, you're able to experience its progression and participate in every gameplay feature without spending money. This would work great within Nintendogs, allowing gamers to only purchase cosmetic items, and not limiting certain breeds or modes to being only available through purchase.

Make It Happen, Nintendo

At the end of the day, this seems like an idea that's just too good to not eventually happen. With society's obsession over dogs, the new and improved capabilities of smart phones, and the continual trend of porting popular handheld franchises to the mobile platform, it's just a matter of time before we see Nintendogs pop up in the app store, and I'll be patiently waiting here until that day.
