PlayStation VR is about to get its killer app - or should we say its killer CATNapp. Eh? Eh? Aw, fine. Anyways, Neko Atsume VR is coming out on May 31st.

Neko Atsume first appeared on iOS and Android phones in 2014, and quickly became a sensation. The game sees the player purchasing objects and food, placing them around their house and yard, and waiting to see what cats drop by. That's... that's it. But the cats are so goddamn cute.

The goal for many players was to collect every possible cat, each of which has certain needs or desires be met before they visit. Each new cat drops off a present for the player, as well - usually new toys that can be placed for other cats. Eventually players start attracting 'rare' cats, such as Joe Dimeowggio.

Neko Atsume VR doesn't seem to add too much to the experience. The player will not be able to interact directly with the cats - no petting, or playing, to be had. One new addition is a more dynamic photo mode, which might be enough to sway people. Still, being able to walk around in full VR, setting down objects with your hands, could have its fans. The game seems to be very "zen" - the sort of game people play when they just want to relax.

The biggest downside, of course, is that it is VR - the original game had the benefit of not requiring much effort to get into. Neko Atsume Virtual Reality demands players not only have a VR set-up, but put it on before playing. No one will be able to watch a movie or TV show while idly collecting cats here.

The game will be out on May 31st in Japan (with no Western date announced yet), and go for 1,944 yen (a bit less than $20 USD at the moment). The original Neko Atsume, for its part, is still free (but with microtransactions to get you that good cat food), and might serve as an effective demo, if you're curious. You know, like cats are curious? Bah, fine. Me and Chairman Meow don't need your appreciation.
