You can get a mouse shaped like an old-school NES controller now. If you want.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It’s the whole reason why there’s a bunch of mini-consoles out there that have dozens of old games being emulated on what amounts to a Raspberry Pi. It’s why some schmuck at Paramount that it would be a good idea to create a movie about Sonic the Hedgehog.

And apparently, it’s also the reason why this mouse exists.

It’s an NES controller that has done some extreme yoga and turned itself into a mouse. Its creation is about as convoluted as it looks. This whole thing started with Daniel Jansson, a Swedish industrial designer that created the original prototype back when he was in design school. It didn’t exactly impress his teachers when he created a mouse made to look like an NES controller, and without and contacts in the industry, the prototype sat on his shelf for years just collecting dust.

And then 8BitDo came along, dusted it off, and decided to start mass production. You might remember 8BitDo from such other retro-inspired recreations of gamepads for modern consoles and PC. The Nintendo Entertainment System gamepad mouse seemed like the perfect fit to round out their winter collection, and so a deal was struck.

They call it the 8BitDo N30 Wireless Mouse, with the name representing the approximate age of the original NES’ debut. The mouse itself is pretty standard, with the A and B buttons replacing the left and right clicks, while the middle mouse wheel has been replaced by a tiny touchpad where a finger can tickle the mouse to scroll.

The D-pad is relocated to the thumb where left and right represent forward and back on your browser, and up and down are the page keys in case you prefer to use those instead of the touchpad/mouse wheel.

It runs on a single AA battery and a USB dongle is cleverly hidden inside the battery compartment. Everything else is plug-and-play.

You can get the N30 for just $24.99 USD, with shipping available worldwide. It’s the perfect stocking stuffer for that retro-gamer friend of yours, so order now while supplies last.
