The Assassin's Creed franchise is making the jump to live-action media once more, as Netflix is making a show based on the video game franchise.
There was a time when video game to screen adaptations were panned upon arrival, but Netflix has thrown that thinking out of the window. Netflix has developed acclaimed animated video game shows, like Castlevania and Dragon's Dogma. Netflix is also making an animated Resident Evil series, as well as a live-action one, following the children of Albert Wesker from the games.
Netflix has announced its next video game adaptation via a post on the NXOnNetflix Twitter page. According to Variety, Netflix has made a deal with Ubisoft regarding adaptations of the Assassin's Creed franchise, starting with a live-action show. The Assassin's Creed show currently lacks a showrunner, but Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik from Ubisoft are acting as Executive Producers.
There is currently no word regarding the setting of the Assassin's Creed show. It's unclear whether the series will be an adaptation of the games, such as the Ezio trilogy, or whether it will follow new characters in a setting that has yet to be explored in the games. The next title in the Assassin's Creed saga is going to the Viking era in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but the story of the series could easily fit into different periods of history.
The Netflix show won't be the first live-action adaptation of the franchise, as there was already a bad Assassin's Creed movie released in 2016. The scope of the Assassin's Creed franchise is such that it would be easy for the TV show to distance itself from the story of the games and the previous movie. Assassin's Creed is an easy video game property to adapt for the small screen, as it mostly involves real-world elements and places, unlike a franchise like Super Mario Bros.
