Netflix has claimed during an earnings call (first reported by VGC) that it isn't going to go on a "buying spree" after its recent acquisition of Oxenfree developer Night School Studio. Instead, Netflix will only acquire a studio if it sees a "great opportunity," hinting at more acquisitions in the future if the timing is right.

"...It’s something that will be opportunistic,” chief operating officer Gregory Peters explains to investors. "So, I would say don’t expect us to go on a tearing, buying spree or something like that. This will be one of the tools that we use, and we’ll use it opportunistically when we find a great opportunity out there."

Netflix announced earlier this year that it would be expanding into the gaming market, allowing users to stream mobile games as part of the standard Netflix subscription package at no extra cost. It's still unknown as to whether Netflix has their own developers or will just acquire other developers to do its work for it, but today's news certainly implies that Netflix will continue to look for more studios to bolster its gaming division.

It's also still not very clear as to whether Netflix will create original games or simply stream currently existing IPs. It was rumored earlier this month that the company is planning to create a title based on Squid Game to capitalise on the show's popularity, although which developer is working on it and what it would even look like is still unknown.

It's not like Netflix is lacking in unique properties it could use to make recoginsable games. Stranger Things has already had multiple smaller games from a variety of developers and has even appeared in big blockbuster titles such as Far Cry 6.

As for what Night School Studio is currently working on, the developer recently announced Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, a sequel to the critically acclaimed Oxenfree that released back in 2016. While the game doesn't have a concrete release date just yet, it's expected to launch at some point in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
