Netflix has just released the opening credits for its new gaming docuseries, High Score, which can be seen exclusively on the IGN YouTube page. The series, which explores the golden age of video games, is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform on Wednesday, August 19.

Revisiting iconic games like Pac-Man and Doom, the docuseries looks at the imagination and ingenuity behind the development of early video games. It also examines how the computer technology behind the first games eventually led to the developments of classics like Space Invaders, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter II, Mortal KombatSonic the Hedgehog, MADDEN NFL, and more.

Directed by France Costrel, High Score is narrated by Charles Martinet, the long-running voice of Nintendo icon Mario. The series, which travels back to a time when there were no set rules or roadmaps, recalls the humble beginnings of industry giants such as Nintendo, Sega, Square, Midway Games, and id Software, among others.

Nintendo, for example, distributed its first video game console, the Color TV-Game, in 1977. It eventually became a household name with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, which was followed by the launch of legendary games like Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros, and Pokémon.

Sega, meanwhile, produced its first coin-operated games in the 1960s, which eventually led to the development of video game consoles, like the SG-1000 in 1983 and the Sega Genesis in 1988. The company has gone on to create fan favorites like Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, and Yakuza.

Not simply an exercise in nostalgia, High Score also delves into the cultural significance of gaming which has gone from being a simple pastime to a major force in modern entertainment. Given that many of these games have stood the test of time and set the standard for modern video games, High Score is also about understanding where we came from and how we got to where we are.

Netflix, which has been at the forefront of video game adaptations with The Witcher, The Old Guard and Castlevania, will make all six episodes of High Score available on Wednesday, August 19.
