Netflix employees have announced a walkout, following the company's support of comedian Dave Chappelle's new special. As part of the show "The Closer", Chappelle states that he is "team TERF" and expresses support for J.K. Rowling, but the streaming giant has defended hosting the content.

The walkout is set for October 20, next Wednesday, and is organized by Netflix employee resource group Trans*. Planning for the strike is being done in a Slack channel of more than 800 staffers, meaning that it could possibly have a real impact on the service.

"Our leadership has shown us that they do not uphold the values for which we are held", reads the walkout announcement, as reported by LA Times.

"Between the numerous emails and non-answers that have been given, we have been told explicitly that we somehow cannot understand the nuance of certain content. I don’t know about you, but asking for us to show the whole story and not just the pieces that harm trans and [LGBTQ+] people is not an unreasonable ask.

“So, I encourage us all to state clearly that we, as Netflix employees are stunning not simply when we are doing the work that our roles demand of us but also when we challenge the very principles of our company.”

The purpose of the walkout is to get Netflix to acknowledge the harm caused by Chappelle's transphobic jokes, and to pledge to invest in more LGBTQ+ content.

Netflix's response to the controversy so far has been to target the staff who have spoken out, as seen in the suspension of multiple employees.

Senior software engineer Terra Field was one of these suspended employees, after she and others joined a Zoom meeting to discuss Netflix's hosting of the Chappelle special. She has since been reinstated after an investigation found that she was indeed invited to this meeting, and did not gatecrash it as initially reported. However, this does raise questions concerning the company's management, with staff seemingly punished for speaking out against senior staff decision making.

Terra has been outspoken against the special since it launched. On October 7, she tweeted: "Promoting TERF ideology (which is what we [Netflix] did by giving it a platform yesterday) directly harms trans people, it is not some neutral act."

On top of the walkout, the group will hold a virtual event October 19 where staff can discuss the effect of Chappelle's comments on the trans community.
