Netflix has revealed it is working on a prequel to The Witcher set 1200 years before the main series.

The Witcher has been an unmitigated hit regardless of the platform on which it has been released. The books were a hit, the video games were too, and the Netflix series has reached heights that its creators likely never imagined. In fact, the success of the show has led to the books and the games getting an additional boost.

It makes sense that Netflix would want to do as much with The Witcher as it possibly can. Production for season two has begun, although the COVID-19 outbreak has delayed that process. Plus, there is an animated Witcher movie coming to the platform sometime in the future as well. Witcher fans rejoice as Netflix has now revealed it is working on another project linked to the franchise.

The newly announced show will be very different from anything Witcher fans are used to, including those who have played the games and read the books. That's because it will be set 1200 years before the events of what happened during season one of the Netflix show. It will be called The Witcher: Blood Origin reports GamesRadar+, and will focus on the fall of the elven world and the forgotten tale of the first-ever Witcher.

Witcher writer Declan de Barra will work as showrunner on the series, while the regular series' showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich is attached as an executive producer. "What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans?" de Barra asks when discussing what exactly the six-part series will cover. "The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher."

Prequels to blockbuster fantasy shows appear to be the order of the day right now. Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones are getting the prequel treatment, and now The Witcher is too. Despite it taking place before Henry Cavill's Witcher was around, it will be fascinating to see how the lineage of Witchers came to be. As for what's next, The Witcher season two and the aforementioned animated movie will be here long before the prequel, even with the delays in production.
