Get to know Zane the Agent in the new Borderlands 3 trailer.

As we barrel towards the release date of the hotly anticipated third entry into the Borderlands franchise, developer Gearbox is giving us a good look at each of the four characters that comprise the latest batch of vault hunters.

Zane is known as the Agent, having lived a life filled with espionage, sabotage, and assassination. He follows in the footsteps of Zer0 the Assassin from Borderlands 2 and might have even met him when they were both at assassin school.

The latest trailer showcases Zane’s past and present jobs, which he describes as “janitor, exterminator, and plumber,” although we kinda get the message that these descriptors might be euphemisms. Nevertheless, we get a good look at Zane’s past and present in this video.

Starting with Zane’s abilities. Mr. Agent has three action skills, including Digi-Clone, SNTNL, and Barrier. The Digi-Clone creates a holographic doppelganger of Zane that distracts enemies and draws their fire. Meanwhile, Zane is able to escape and line up headshots with a sniper rifle. This skill basically mimics the hologram skill that Zer0 used in Borderlands 2, with a little bit of Digi-Clone Jack from The Pre-Sequel.

Next is SNTNL, which is an attack drone that seeks out and destroys. This skill is very much in line with Wilhelm’s action skill in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, minus the second healing drone.

And finally, Barrier is a wall that lets friendly bullets pass through while stopping enemy bullets. The Soldier from Borderlands 1 and Commando from Borderlands 2 had similar abilities tied to their turrets action skills.

The trailer doesn’t go too far into Zane’s history, but we know from previous teasers that Zane is actually the younger brother of Captain and Baron Flynt. You kill Captain Flynt in the early portion of Borderlands 2, while Baron Flynt gets offed by the first group of vault hunters in Borderlands 1.

However, we’re a little bit confused about Zane’s accent. Zane is very clearly sporting an Irish inflection, while the other Flynt’s all had distinctly more Southern drawls. Hopefully, we get an explanation for that in a future teaser.
