New York Comic Con is in full swing this weekend, and to launch things off Toei Animation decided to reveal the first trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie that was just announced last May.

It's called Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, for reasons that aren't immediately obvious even after watching the trailer. There's some evil organization, a portly kid in a car being talked down to by a mustachioed dude in gold chain, two alien-looking creatures that will almost certainly turn out to be the big bads that Goku and Piccolo have to defeat, and of course, Piccolo getting attacked while meditating on top of a mesa.

Also, Pan is there, and she appears to be coming into her own as a Saiyan. She's only briefly presented in the trailer, but perhaps she'll have a larger role in the actual film.

The alien villains are called Gamma 1 and 2, and judging by the cape and strangely heroic poses, I'm gonna guess these two think they're superheroes working for some shady company that manages to convince them that Goku and friends are evil. Where Gamma 1 and 2 come from and how they got so powerful remains a mystery.

Thanks to an announcement from Toei Animation, we know that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero takes place at the end of the Kid Buu Saga right before the Peaceful World Saga. Original series creator Akira Toriyama is once again writing the script and parts of the dialogue, reworking some of the characters to be more like their manga designs rather than the anime.

So far, we've got Goku, Piccolo, Pan, Vegeta, Krillin, Bulma, Broly, Korin, and Dende as confirmed characters for the movie.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will arrive in 2022, likely in select theatres with a wider streaming release.
