Square Enix held a twentieth-anniversary live stream for the Dragon Quest Monsters series, during which they announced that a port of Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D was coming to smartphones and that a new entry in the series was coming to consoles in the future, which would star Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

All we know about the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters game is that it's a fresh new entry in the series and won't be connected to the world of the Joker titles. The game will be coming to consoles (which likely means the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4) and it will star Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age when they were children.

Akira Toriyama has created character artwork for the younger versions of Erik & Mia, which can be seen below.

This won't be the first time that a child version of a Dragon Quest character has starred in one of the Monsters games, as you played as Prince Keifer from Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past in the Japan-exclusive Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart.

Like the events of Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, the story of this new Dragon Quest Monsters title likely won't be canon with the events of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and will be its own separate story.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D was a remake of the original Game Boy Dragon Quest Monsters title for the Nintendo 3DS. We never received an English localization of Terry's Wonderland 3D, though the wider smartphone audience may prompt Square Enix to finally create a version of the game for the international market.

Now that Square Enix has started to move the Dragon Quest series from just Nintendo systems to other consoles and PC, it means that we have a better chance of seeing an English version of the new Dragon Quest Monsters game and it's safe to assume that game will be released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and for Windows in the future.
