We’ve got some new screens to show how Sir Daniel Fortesque’s skeletal face is coming along.

Gamescom is giving us all a first-hand look at what all the latest and greatest in gaming has in store, with MediEvil being the latest PlayStation remake to capture our sense of nostalgia. The original came out way back in 1998, and now over two decades later MediEvil is getting the Spyro treatment with a loving remake for modern hardware.

And thanks to the PlayStation Blog, we have a few new screenshots to share.

As you can see from Sir Dan’s beautiful mug, things are going quite well. What was previously a cinematic sequence can now be done entirely using the game’s engine to cut down on development time. But don’t let the lack of pure cinema sequences feel like a letdown since the whole freakin’ game is gorgeous enough to pass for a feature-length Tim Burton film.

Also, we got to hear about some of MediEvil’s new gameplay thanks to a Gamescom demo. MediEvil is described as having “a hint of Dark Souls” in its design, even though MediEvil came out many years before the From Software classic. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that Dark Souls was inspired by the sort of late ‘90s action-adventure gameplay that was epitomized by MediEvil.

No enemies can be taken for granted as even a single swipe from an opposing zombie can take a significant chunk of your health. Levels are filled with tight corridors, secrets, and shortcuts that make the game easier or harder, depending on how you approach them. There are also elaborate boss fights with giant baddies, breakable weapons and shields, and limited ammunition for you to ration throughout your journey.

Fans of the original will be happy to note that the remake isn’t touching the level design or core gameplay, but is strictly overhauling the visuals and sounds. Some of the original voice actors were brought in to re-record their lines, while new voice actors were brought in to give MediEvil a newer sound.

The entire soundtrack was also re-recorded by the Prague Symphony Orchestra, which is pretty impressive for a 20-year-old game.

MediEvil arrives for PlayStation 4 on October 25th.
