The name of the next Need for Speed game has been leaked online.

We knew that EA was working on a new Need for Speed game from an investor announcement last February. We were hoping to get a bit of a teaser at this year’s E3 festivities, but no such luck. We didn’t even get a name.

But we have a name now thanks to what appears to be an accidental leak from an Austrian game site. Gameware posted the listing “Need for Speed Heat” yesterday using placeholder art that seemed to be taken from a previous game, Need for Speed No Limits. Along with the art and name, we also got an “AT” PEGI rating, a price of 67.99 Euros (or roughly $76 USD), and a release window of sometime in 2019. The listing has since been taken down.

That release window isn’t too much of a surprise as EA said they were planning on a new Need for Speed sometime this year. The name, however, gives us an idea of what the next game will be about. Heat certainly implies either a tropical or subtropical atmosphere, a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the police, or possibly both.

One of the complaints against the last Need for Speed game, Payback, was a distinct lack of police chase scenes in its freeplay mode and a limited number of chases during the campaign. A return to more historic police-oriented scenarios would be a welcome change for NFS fans.

We still don’t know much else about the game, but a blog post from Swedish developer Ghost Games gave us a clue as to when we might find out more.

"We’re building an amazing game that we can’t wait to show off, and the next time we talk, we’ll be packing our bags and heading south for the full unveiling,” the developer wrote. Sweden is pretty far north, as far as countries go, but Germany is located roughly south of them and just so happens to host Gamescom at the end of August. We’re likely to get more details then.
