A trailer for the twenty-third Pokémon movie has been released and it seems to be taking a leaf from the old Safari Zone episode of the anime, as Ash appears to encounter the Pokémon world equivalent of Tarzan.

The Pokémon movie franchise followed the version of Ash Ketchum from the anime for nineteen films, with the twentieth film going the reboot route and following a new version of Ash. There were two reboot movies, followed by a CGI remake of the first Pokémon movie, with Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution retelling the story of Ash's encounter with Mewtwo.

The first Pokémon movie of the Pokémon Sword & Shield era is going in a strange direction, as Ash appears to be encountering a character who lives out in the wild. Pocket Monsters the Movie: Coco (also romanized as Koko), will involve Ash meeting a new character who is similar to Tarzan, who is likely the titular Coco/Koko.

The trailer also shows a baby on an altar, which appears to be the new character as a child. The altar also resembles the one from Pokémon 4Ever - Celebi: The Voice of the Forest, which was the movie involving Celebi and time travel. The new Pokémon anime series has brought back old characters, regions, and Pokémon, so it's possible that Celebi could appear in the movie.

It's unclear where the new Pokémon movie fits on the various timelines. The fact that Go from the new anime hasn't appeared in the trailer means that it could be part of the reboot movie universe, or it might be part of its own continuity. There is still a lot we don't know about the new Pokémon movie, but it seems that it's continuing the trend of referencing the older films and focusing on new adventures without carrying the baggage of the anime continuity.

Pocket Monsters the Movie: Coco will be released in Japan on July 10, 2020. There is currently no word regarding an international release.
