As much as I don’t care for the Resident Evil movies, it’s going to be weird that Milla Jovovich won’t be starring in the upcoming film reboot of the franchise. In an interview with IGN, director Johannes Roberts confirmed that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be a fresh start and have no connection with Paul W.S. Anderson’s series.

“Obviously, there is the Resident Evil [film] franchise and this movie doesn’t have anything to do with that,” said Roberts. “It’s a whole separate origin story based in the roots of the [video game series] and the world of horror.”

While Roberts said that he enjoyed Anderson’s Resident Evil film universe, he hopes that Welcome to Raccoon City will be the start of a new franchise of movies under the Resident Evil umbrella. He also mentioned that he wasn’t tasked with remaking Anderson’s versions of the movies, and had full control over his movie’s direction. “We’re not [making a remake]. We’re going in a completely different [direction]... It was a real pleasure to be given the reins of a new franchise, hopefully, that really is its own thing,” he said.

Unlike Anderson’s series, which eventually became action oriented, Roberts intends to take his movie back to Resident Evil’s roots and focus more on the horror aspect of it. “The big thing for this movie is tone. The thing I loved about the games is they were just scary as hell and that is very much what I wanted to,” he said. “That atmosphere — it’s rain, it’s constantly dark, it’s creepy. Raccoon City is kind of this rotten character in the movie and that sort of atmosphere in the games I wanted to put in [the film].”

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will tell the story of the first two games in one movie, featuring an origin story for iconic characters like Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy.

“I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and recreate the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them,” said Roberts. “whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”

Roberts went on to reveal that the movie will focus on Raccoon City, the police station, as well as Spencer Mansion. “We have two very separate locations but we split people off into their worlds. One is more of a siege movie style with the police station, and then you have the mansion which is creepy as f*ck.”

Lastly, the director said that John Carpenter is the filmic inspiration for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City; but just not the movies you’re probably thinking of. “I’m a huge John Carpenter fan and I really took to that. The way he tells these claustrophobic siege movies and I took movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog and these disparate group of characters coming together under siege, and I took that as my filmic inspiration.”
