The samurai sent into a dark future now makes his fated return to gaming.
Titled Battle Through Time, Samurai Jack's new adventure, which is set to debut on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC this coming summer, will showcase the character time-hopping through alternate periods of human history in order to finally banish the shapeshifting evildoer Aku.
Spearheaded by Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker developers, Soleil, and published by Adult Swim Games, Battle Through Time will give players an interpersonal look at the samurai amid events taking place before the show was revived back in 2017. Jack's welcome return to the television screen, which ended his long-gestating story, showed off a far darker and more nuanced version of the samurai, which hopefully will be injected into the video game.
As the Adult Swim Games page reads:
"Become Samurai Jack, the greatest warrior of the past, present and future. Journey through time to finally stop Aku's evil reign in this new adventure told by the creators of Samurai Jack. Encounter your favorite characters from the show including The Scotsman, Scaramouche, Sir Rothchild, and more!"
Battle Through Time is presented as a hack-and-slash with a variety of other long-ranged and melee weapons at one's disposal. The 3D animation appears just as phenomenal as the show's ornate 2D art.
While this isn't the first time Jack has found himself recreated in the form of an interactive video game, witnessed via The Amulet of Time and The Shadow of Aku, this iteration already appears to be the best experience yet. Seeing that Season 5 writer Darrick Bachman has penned the game's narrative, in addition to the fact that some under Soleil were prior Team Ninja developers with Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive in their resumes, it's safe to assume Battle Through Time is in good hands.
Both Bachman and Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky will be making appearances at PAX East to promote the forthcoming title. The duo will be found hosting an Adult Swim Games' panel on February 28th and will underscore far more of what players can expect while venturing through time as the lost samurai on the hunt for the evil Aku.
As the iconic samurai himself admits: "Gotta get back, back to the past."
