Shovel Knight will finally be making his return in a new game called Shovel Knight Dig, which was announced today during the Yacht Club Games Presents livestream.

Shovel Knight Dig is a joint venture between Nitrome and Yacht Club Games that has been in development for around a year. The story begins when Drill Knight steals all of Shovel Knight's loot and descends into the earth. Shovel Knight must take up his trusty weapon and follow Drill Knight into the ground. Shovel Knight Dig seems to be a gaiden game that exists in a separate continuity from the original game, which means that it might be more of a spin-off title than a full sequel to Shovel Knight.

The gameplay of Shovel Knight Dig seems to be similar to Rogue Legacy and Steamworld Dig. The levels are procedurally generated from pre-existing stages that are stitched together, though the boss encounters seem to be placed in pre-determined locations. Shovel Knight must reclaim his loot in order to return to the surface world and purchase new items that can be used to unlock permanent upgrades. The journey won't be easy, as Drill Knight has earned the fealty of other warriors who will try to stop Shovel Knight, including Spore Knight and his poisonous mushrooms.

The visuals of Shovel Knight Dig are a huge improvement over the game's predecessor, and it feels as if the aesthetics have been brought up to the 16-bit era, with a much more colorful and vibrant style of pixel art used for the characters and stages. The soundtrack for Shovel Knight Dig is being composed by Jake Kaufman, who also created the soundtrack for the original Shovel Knight.

The official PlayStation.blog has confirmed that Shovel Knight Dig is coming to PlayStation 4, but no other systems have been revealed as of yet. The fact that Shovel Knight was released on so many different systems should give everyone hope that Shovel Knight Dig will be making its way to PC and the other consoles.

Shovel Knight Dig is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
