In a recent Reddit post user Corporat pointed out a recent application for a new trademark HeroQuest Legacies that was made on July 1, 2020 by Restoration Games. What this means is unclear but it is likely to relate to a new game that they are developing. Could it be that we are about to see the return of HeroQuest?

The HeroQuest board game was originally a joint venture between MB Games and Games Workshop and was released in 1989. At the time GW was riding the wave, with their boxed games and tabletop wargames proving to be popular in the UK and Europe. Designed through the partnership with GW, MB Games released HeroQuest into mainstream toy shops. Meanwhile, GW released an advanced version of the game sold exclusively in their stores. Both companies continued to support the game by releasing new expansions and content until development ceased in 1997. The prospect of HeroQuest making a return is already getting gamers excited. For many, the title was their introduction to the board game and tabletop hobby, and the adventures will be remembered with the fondest of memories.

GW at best made the mistake of allowing their trademark for HeroQuest elapse, with it to be picked up later by veteran game designer Greg Stafford for use on the RPG system he was developing at the time. The rights to this and the HeroQuest name were later sold to Moon Games around the time of his death in 2018. Consequently, GW has been unable to use the moniker that they made famous, having to opt for the Warhammer Quest brand name instead.

In order for a new HeroQuest board game to see the light of day, several hurdles would have to be overcome. In order to use the name, an agreement would have to be made with Moon Games. If a straight copy of the game were to be made then the rights to use the IP and artwork for the old HeroQuest would have to be negotiated. This would likely be with both Hasbro, MB Games' current owner, and GW. It could be that the game will feature all-new artwork that pays homage to the original while skirting around any copyright issues and giving an updated take on the original rules. Regardless, we are excited about what Restoration Games is up to and can’t wait to play new HeroQuest adventures once again.
