Despite being such a highly publicized controversy, it appears that New World still has one of its worst issues at launch. Players are reporting that the MMO is - yet again - bricking their GPUs, raising concerns over whether or not the game is safe to play in its current state.

Recently reported by PC manufacturer PowerGPU, players are reporting the same issues that cropped up during New World's closed beta in July. It only appears to be affected players who do not cap the framerate.

"We have people sending in emails that their GPUs are no longer working after playing New World", shared the PowerGPU Twitter account.

This is not an isolated incident. One player reported on Reddit that their new PC with a 3080TI GPU, only for it to brick when they tried to boot the game up for a second time. Others in the replies are also reporting other performance issues, with user MK18_Ocelot sharing: "I capped mine at 60FPS and was fine for about 3 hours until I went to bed. Woke up this morning, upped the cap to 90 and black screened within about 30 minutes."

While these reports suggest that capping the FPS won't protect you entirely, PowerGPU has shared a way to do so before you launch the game and risk any damage to your set-up.

These reports echo the complaints made during New World'd closed beta this summer, which was somewhat overshadowed by the controversy. As shared by one player at the time: "Playing the New World beta on my EVGA 3090 has fried my graphics card completely. There are many accounts of this same thing happening with the same card with the same game.”

Amazon's MMO debut did just about manage to survive the PR fallout however, as it was claimed that it wasn't the game's fault, rather a faulty batch of GPUs. This theory gained merit when manufacturer EVGA blamed "poor workmanship" for the broken RTX 3090s it received during this time, suggesting it was due to faulty soldering.
