New World's economy is in shambles. The game is true to life in that the community are panicking as values plummet and the system starts to fail. People are exchanging goods rather than using money, gambling their savings, and forming "socialist utopias" to try and wade through the chaos. Amazon is scrambling to fix it, but simply rolling back or wiping servers isn't on the table.

There are a couple of reasons for New World's economy falling apart. Firstly, the number of coins you get for questing, mob killing, and salvaging doesn't outweigh the cost of tax, crafting, and repairs. On top of that, a gold exploit was found that let players fill their wallets, causing mass deflation. It was so rampant, Amazon had to stop money transfers - now it's impossible to use the currency at all.

With prices skyrocketing and the entire economy becoming worthless in the midst of bannable exploits, things seem dire. Some even believe the economy is irreparable, that the damage is done. Money that shouldn't be there is now in the system even if people have been banned. One fix that many posited (and worried about) was that New World would simply wipe its servers or rollback to a safe point while also fixing the exploit and balancing taxes and crafting costs. However, knowing how this would upset the playerbase, Amazon is not considering it at this time.

A 'rollback' is the act of pushing a server to a previous state. Think of it as using a backup on your PC when you get a virus. You'll lose any data you accumulated over the past couple of weeks or months but the virus will be gone. In New World's case, the crumbling economy is the virus. However, this isn't a popular solution with players.

Some state that it isn't so bad that the game is unplayable, others believe a rollback should've been done at the start, and a lot have quit for good. Whatever Amazon chooses to do, it will be hard to find a solution for everyone.
