Each Assassin's Creed game takes its players back to a particular period in human history. Reports earlier this week claimed next on the docket for the series would be a visit to the Aztec Empire. However, that report has prompted another claiming that not to be the case at all and that the next Assassin's Creed game will actually take place in Baghdad.

The new report refuting the Aztec one and claiming the next game will be based in Baghdad comes from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. “The next AC game is Rift, which is set in Baghdad,” Schreier wrote on Reddit, referencing an article he wrote earlier this year revealing that the next Assassin's Creed game will be called Rift. That was also when he highlighted Rift will be a much shorter game as it started life as a Valhalla expansion.

As for whether the previous report claiming the Aztec Empire is next was a mix up and it will actually be a part of the confirmed Assassin's Creed Infinity, Schreier has shot that down too. “After that will be AC Infinity, and while that's going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them, I've heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec.”

So no Aztec Empire for Assassin's Creed, at least not yet. There's a lot for AC fans to potentially be excited about in the near and distant future, though. Although not yet confirmed by Ubisoft, Rift is expected to be here sometime in 2023, or perhaps as soon as the end of 2022. The studio has promised big updates on the future of the series in September, most likely headlining the Ubisoft Forward that has already been announced.

After that will be Infinity, which has been announced, but details are sparse. Probably because what is bound to be a massive and ambitious game is at least two years away. Infinity will span multiple time periods throughout history and the studios behind Origins and Valhalla have teamed up to make it happen. It will also be a live service game, as the name implies, so will grow and be added to over time.
