Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is the newest installment in the Ni no Kuni series, with a colorful world and deep lore taken from the console games and placed in a new MMO for players to adventure in. Following two great games, there is a lot that the new Ni no Kuni has to live up to. Some of these things, such as the fairies, might not make a lot of sense to those who aren't familiar with the series and how it likes to play with the imagination on a grand scale just as its Ghibli Films predecessors.

Does the newest installment live up to the legacy of the two previous games? That's up to the player, but there are some choices that simply don't make sense. So, sit back and relax as we contemplate together.

6 Why Don't The Ni No Kuni Citizens Notice Their Friends Are Possessed?

Ni no Kuni Cross Worlds - chosen protagonist in the Soul Divers machine

Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds opens with an animation showing your chosen protagonist entering a VR game machine called Soul Divers, but you quickly learn that this is not simply a game. The Soul Divers machine actually transports your soul from your world to the world of Ni no Kuni, where you inhabit the body of someone who lives there, effectively possessing them.

Their souls are still within the body too, but are separate and cannot control the body anymore. The thing is, surely the Ni no Kuni citizens should be a bit more panicked that their friends and family members no longer remember them and are running around talking about a game, experience points, and parties? No? Just me then.

5 Great Uncle Autumn's Pipe

Everyone knows that fire and wood don't usually belong in the same sentence unless something is already on fire. Great Uncle Autumn, a wise and giant tree who lives in a lush forest, smoking away on his giant pipe? It raises so many questions: Are the contents flammable? Is it just for looks? How does he pack it with no limbs?

It's unsettling enough to talk to something that large over you, now you must worry about a pipe of who-knows-what spilling on your head? Maybe it's best not to think about it too much.

4 Why Don't The Players Realize This Isn't A Game?

Ni no Kuni character who doesn't realise the world is real and thinks it's a game

As we previously mentioned, Cross Worlds sees a bunch of normal people thrown into Ni no Kuni in the belief they have entered a virtual reality game, but why don't they realise it's more than that? Other than a couple of stray comments from side characters, most are just running around and trying to "party up" like complete numpties.

Would VR games ever be that good that there would be no menus, no UI, no shortcuts, and more importantly, no way to log out? Presumably, after a while, they'd want to return to reality and become panicked when they can't do so? It also poses the question of whether they feel pain and sensation when in these bodies?

3 If The Great Fairy Is Drippy, What Happened To His Accent?

Ni no kuni Cross Worlds The Great Fairy

As you progress through the game, you'll eventually meet the Great Fairy and if you're a Ni no Kuni fan, he should look particularly familiar to you. That's right, he looks like an older version of Drippy, the mascot character from Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

Drippy is the only fairy we have seen with a lantern hanging from his nose, so it stands to reason that this is him. But if it is, what happened to his accent? Don't worry, he still has a Welsh accent, but rather than having a southern coast accent like last time, he's now got an east/mid-Wales accent. It's just not the same.

2 When Familiars Evolve, Why Don't They Change Form Anymore?

Familiars from the first Ni no Kuni game are back to help you out in battle once more, but they don't work exactly the same as last time. Even though you can level up your familiars enough to get them to evolve, they don't physically change like they used to.

For example, Mite, one of the more recognizable familiars in the original game, could evolve into Mighty Mite, and then either Dynamite or Mermite. Well, unfortunately, you're always gonna be stuck with the bog-standard Mite in Cross Worlds I'm afraid. This could be a result of limitations in the game, perhaps it'll get added later, but either way, it's a shame as it means we have fewer adorable familiars to squee over.

1 Grimalkin Features Are Back In The Tildrum Family

Grimalkins are a race of feline residents in the world of Ni no Kuni, ranging from those who look like lions to those who look like normal house cats, but lifesize humanoid versions. Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, the protagonist of Ni no Kuni 2 and founder of Evermore, is half Grimalkin and half humanfolk, so he looks like a human with cat ears and a tail. We know from Ni no Kuni 2 that his son, Ferdinand, has no discernable Grimalkin traits despite being at the very least, a quarter Grimalkin.

So where does Cross Worlds come into it? Cross Worlds is set after the events of the previous games and players return to Evermore and meet the king, Lucilion Pettiwhisker Tildrum of Evermore. Based on his name, he's clearly a descendant of Evan, yet he looks far more Grimalkin than Evan ever did.

We don't know how much time has passed since Ni no Kuni 2, and as we already know that Ferdinand isn't the king here, it must be quite some time after that. We can only assume that at some point a Tildrum married a Grimalkin again, or you know, Cross Worlds just wanted a leonine king because it's much cooler.
