Four years in and Niantic has revealed that it plans to increase Pokémon GO's level cap for the very first time.

Playing Pokémon GO is about different things for different people. Some trainers want Pokémon with a high CP that will fare them well in battle. Others are aiming to catch as many different Pokémon as possible in an attempt to complete their Pokédex. For a few, it's about leveling up as quickly and efficiently as possible.

There's one problem with that last one, though. Unlike the other two, there is a limit in place. Trainers who want stronger Pokémon can continue to strengthen their team, and since Niantic is nowhere close to having added every single Pokémon to Pokémon GO, completing its Pokédex will be a quest that doesn't end for a very long time.

Leveling up, however, has had a limit for a while. The highest level trainers can achieve in Pokémon GO is Level 40. It requires five million XP to reach Level 40. That might seem like a lot to some trainers, maybe even an unachievable goal, but there are a lot of players who reached it a long time ago. Players who have grown frustrated as collecting XP now means nothing as they have reached the game's level cap.

Four years after Pokémon GO's release, Niantic has finally confirmed that is all about to change. While it hasn't said when the increase will happen, or what level will be the new maximum, it has promised that the change will come sooner rather than later. The most likely scenario is that the new level cap will be at 50, and trainers will need to earn an additional five million XP to get there, bringing their totals to 10 million XP.

While also not confirmed, there does appear to be a little bit of bad news for trainers who have been at Level 40 for a while already. All of the XP accrued since hitting Pokémon GO's ceiling isn't going to count towards making it to Level 50. Everyone who has already reached Level 40 will start at five million XP once the increase is introduced. Again, this has not been confirmed but seems to be the most likely scenario.
