SpongeBob Squarepants has been given the first gameplay deep dive for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, showing that's basically just a yellow, spongey Mario.

Although GameMill did put out a first look at gameplay earlier in the week that showcased how the game plays, the latest video specifically focuses on SpongeBob and his moveset, as well as showing high-level play with him.

As you'd probably expect, SpongeBob is the starting character of the roster and looks to play very similarly to Smash's iteration of Mario. We get to see all of his normal and heavy attacks in action and, beyond some meme-y references, he's basic enough to be called "a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none".

Beyond having a downwards spike hit, he's also got tons of air-combo potential and some pretty easy-to-master moves. The biggest resemblance is his neutral special attack, which has him blowing out bubbles that are incredibly similar to Mario's fireballs. To differentiate, SpongeBob's bubbles actually slow down if you use them too many times in a row.

After showcasing all of his special moves, the deep dive then shows what SpongeBob would look like in competitive play, with a few minutes of just beating the snot out of Patrick. His combo potential is pretty limitless, with tons of connecting kicks and punches to keep opponents in the air, and some spikes to bring them all the way back down.

One really cool detail shown from this gameplay trailer is that every character has a unique win and lose animation, as well as a unique animation for starting the battle. We get to see SpongeBob's intro here, which has him being carried in by the realistic sailer's hand, similarly to games like Battle For Bikini Bottom. His victory animation has him doing the dance from Band Geeks, which is pretty great.

Patrick is a bit of a punching bag in this video, so we only get to see his losing animation here. Thankfully, the losing animation is incredible, with Patrick having a board stuck to his head like in My Pretty Seahorse.
