Nier: Automata is a crazy game that’s way more than it seems to be. The Nier sequel has certainly found its audience in the three years since its release. With a multitude of different endings, and a critically acclaimed narrative, Nier: Automata has a lot to offer.

Still, there are some things about the game that just don’t add up. Call it nitpicky, but something smells fishy. All kidding aside though, the game is great and offers players plenty of unbelievable moments and twists to keep them entertained for house on end. These are 10 Nier: Automata memes that prove the game makes no sense.

10 Touhou

For those unfamiliar with them, The Touhou game series widely consists of various bullet hell titles. So you can see why players would make the comparison between those games and Automata.

Automata manages to mix in various genres at points, with the bullet hell segments being the most noticeable example. They’re fun, but challenging segments that really turn things on their head.

9 What is This…

It might not seem like it, but Automata is a pretty challenging game a times. Though you can get away with mindless hack and slash tactics at certain parts of the game, other segments will really make you work for it.

The whole Dark Souls comparison may be a little bit played out, but maybe that’s what makes this so funny. We’ve all had similar experiences with challenging titles in the past.

8 Stop That

9S is a bright spot within Nier: Automata’s plot, and always manages to lighten things up with his banter and commentary. That’s how he acts most of the time, at least. But even he has his limits.

9s can get pretty scary at times, as anyone who’s played the game will know. The fact that androids can have such wide raging emotions is what makes the game so interesting.

7 A Common Enemy

Nier: Automata doesn’t try and go about its narrative in a cookie cutter way, and as result the story is beloved by fans. It’s allowed for a lot of discussion among the fan base, but there’s no denying that the narrative itself is rather grim.

Evangelion fans know just how Automata fans do when it comes to certain motifs used throughout the mediums. They both hit you hard, and you don’t really see it coming.

6 Easy Target

There are plenty of different types of Machines found throughout Nier: Automata, but the most common ones you’ll see look just like the poor little guy above.

Machines are a strange kind of enemy. They’re made to be disposable replicates of one another, yet at the same time, many are shown to have their own personality and sense of individuality. Making destroying them a questionable course of action.

5 That Escalated…Quickly

The various interactions and conversations you have with different machines spread out throughout the game make Nier: Automata what it is. Some of these can end up being pretty crazy. Take this one for example.

Machines may seem human at times, but players are often reminded of just how far they have to go in how they process things. This fella seemed to have some good character development going for itself, but kind of blew it at the end there.

4 More Than It Seems

Automata isn’t afraid to do things its own way, and it does so throughout its entirety. It’s why so many people love the game. But that’s also led to some misconceptions as to what the game actually is.

The game has some light hearted moments, sure, but there’s plenty more to it that gamers need to experience for themselves by getting through it on their own. It’s a great experience that many have been coming around to over the years.

3 Hackerman

9S can be hilarious at times throughout the game’s narrative. Whether or not that’s always on purpose is up to interpretation, but there’s no denying that he adds a much needed sense of levity to certain scenarios.

You can call him by a ton of different names, but only real fans know to call him by his true moniker; Hackerman. It’s the name that fits him best, as his skills do come in handy multiple times throughout the game.

2 Too Far

Everyone has different sides to their personalities, and it seems like Androids are no different than humans in that regard. 9S is a great guy most of the time, but even he has his breaking point.

9S can be the nicest guy in the room, or he can completely lose it. He might not seem like it, but he’s not exactly someone you want to be around once they lose their temper.

1 Don’t Eat Fish

The K ending is one of the weirdest in the game. It’s triggered by having 2B eat some mackerel, which then leads to a game over. Apparently, Androids can’t eat fish.

It’s crazy to think that someone capable of the things 2B is capable of would get taken down by a fish. But then again, it’s pretty darn funny too.
