First announced last month, the mobile game Nier Reincarnation has just received its first official gameplay trailer. There's no action in sight — a strange departure for the series — and instead focuses on our mysterious character as they walk through a surreal world.

Nier Reincarnation's director, Yoko Taro, says that it is a "strangely startling type of game." It's certainly different from other Nier titles, but it looks like Reincarnation will still offer players an engaging story and some of the best graphics available on mobile devices.

Like most mobile games, Nier Reincarnation is a free-to-play title. We don't know how it will be monetized at this point, but Taro's words might reassure some fans:

We don't have to make any money from it. If we can cause a stir, then I'd be fine with that. Since it's Nier, that's our perspective in bringing it to the world of smartphones

Hopefully, this isn't a quick cash grab using a popular IP and we will instead get another fantastic entry in the Nier franchise. The only thing we really learn from the new trailer is that the game looks beautiful and that players will be doing a lot of walking. Thankfully, that walking appears to happen in a meticulously crafted surreal world, and we're hopeful that there's a thought-provoking narrative to go along with it.

Nier Reincarnation does not yet have a release date but will be available on both Android and iOS.
