Cultivating plants is one of the side features available in Nier Replicant and is arguably the best way to make gold. It's also the only way to earn the 'Legendary Gardener' achievement/trophy, which is earned by growing the flower known as the Lunar Tear. However, achieving this will take plenty of effort and time on your part.

To grow the Lunar Tear, you need to breed different kinds of hybrid flowers in specific combinations to get the results you want. We have a complete step-by-step guide on how to grow the Lunar Tear, also known as the White Moonflower, right here.

You first need to have unlocked the ability to cultivate plants by completing the quest 'Shopping List'.

This quest is given by the florist in Nier's village and is covered in our Complete Guide To Cultivating Plants, which also includes how to expand your garden plot size.

Updated April 3, 2023: We've updated this article to ensure the information is presented in the best way possible, helping you to grow the Legendary Flower as quickly as possible.

Purchase Moonflower Seeds From Seafront

A split image of the Seafron grocery store and its location on the map in Nier Replicant.

First, you must make a trip to Seafront and purchase some Moonflower seeds. These can all be purchased from the Grocery Store at the above location. You need to get the following:

  • Blue Moonflower Seeds
  • Red Moonflower Seeds
  • Gold Moonflower Seeds

They all cost 120 gold per seed. You should get at least ten of each, which should be enough for the entire process, as well as a couple of spare seeds if needed. As we'll be harvesting seeds each time and you get 2-4 seeds each harvest (that's without watering or fertilizer), you shouldn't need to return to purchase any more seeds.

Watering your plants can increase the chance of a better yield, and fertilizers can increase yield or the speed at which your flowers grow. Use these if you wish to expedite the process.

You can manipulate your system's time and date to make this process a lot quicker, which is covered in our Complete Guide To Cultivating Plants.

Get Peach Moonflower Seeds

First, you want to grow some Peach Moonflower seeds. This can be done by planting Red and Gold Moonflower seeds beside one another in alternating sequences, as shown above.

The ideal layout should be as follows (provided you have unlocked the 15-plot garden):

It will take one day for your flowers to grow fully, and you will immediately be able to see if you have grown any hybrids at this point, as their color will be visibly different, as shown in the image above. Do not harvest your flowers at this point.

We want seeds, not flowers, so unfortunately, we have to wait another day for these flowers to die. You'll know this has happened as instead of pretty flowers, you will have dead plants and scattered petals.

You want to harvest about ten Peach Moonflower seeds, so continue to grow flowers and harvest seeds until you have enough. We managed to get at least one hybrid per full plot each time, and that was without using water or fertilizer. (Remember, each flower gives 2-4 seeds each time.)

Repeat the same process as above of planting your seeds in alternating colors, waiting for the flowers to die, and then harvesting seeds until you have at least ten Indigo Moonflower Seeds. We managed to get at least one hybrid per full plot each time, and that was without using water or fertilizer.

Repeat the process of planting your seeds, waiting for the flowers to die, then harvesting seeds until you have at least ten Pink Moonflower Seeds. The hybrid rate is much lower for this seed, and we only managed to get one flower roughly every 2-3 full-plot attempts. However, this was without using water or fertilizer.

How to Grow The White Moonflower (The Lunar Tear)

Finally, the last hybrid you need to grow is the White Moonflower, more commonly referred to as the Lunar Tear. This can be done by planting Pink and Peach Moonflower seeds beside one another in alternating sequences.

To get the 'Legendary Gardener' accolade, you must harvest the White Moonflower and not the seeds, so make sure you check in on your flowers 24 hours after planting to see if you have successfully grown one.

Once you have harvested the White Moonflower and cleared the message of obtaining the flower, your achievement/trophy should pop. If you are using the time-traveling system manipulation trick on Xbox, be sure to go online before collecting the flower to ensure your achievement unlocks.

This hybrid flower has the lowest success rate out of all of them, reportedly only giving a 1 percent chance of growing one. However, we were lucky to receive one on our first full plot attempt. Keep replanting the seeds you harvest in alternating sequences and retrying until you succeed.
