The Nier series might soon be receiving a new addition or a remake, as Square Enix has filed a trademark for Nier in Japan. This could tie into the recent 10th-anniversary website that Square Enix has launched for the series and could result in a new announcement next year.
The Nier series is best-known for Nier: Automata in 2017, but it originated back in 2010 with Nier, which was released as two separate games in Japan. The version of the game that was released in Europe and North America was called Nier, but in Japan, there was Nier Gestalt on the Xbox 360, while Nier Replicant was released on the PlayStation 3. The main difference between the two versions is that the player character is an old man with a daughter in Nier Gestalt and is a young man with a sister in Nier Replicant.
Square Enix recently opened a 10th-anniversary website for the Nier series which doesn't have much content on it for the time being, but that might be changing very soon. According to Game's Talk, Square Enix filed a trademark on November 29 for the Nier name in relation to programs for video game consoles.
It seems likely that either the first Nier game is being remade (likely with both characters from Nier Gestalt and Nier Replicant playable or integrated into the same story) or that a new game using the Nier name is being released, just to make things awkward for the Wikipedia people.
The tenth anniversary of the Nier series will officially take place on April 22, 2020, so it's likely that the announcement for the next iteration of the series will happen then. In the meantime, there is the Nier: Orchestra Concert that is touring around the world and Nier merchandise for people to purchase on the website.
The original Nier received mixed reviews upon release, but it was clear that there was a gem of a game buried under the unrefined elements of its gameplay. It's possible that the first Nier can be reborn as a new title that has the proper care given to it to and will receive the same adoration as Nier: Automota.
