No, it's still not Mother 3.

In 1993, the war between Nintendo and Sega had grown so heated that Nintendo was willing to curb the industry as a whole if it meant damaging their competition. They were given the chance to do this during a Senate hearing on video game violence, which had been prompted by the release of two games; Mortal Kombat and Night Trap.

Howard Lincoln, who was the chairman of Nintendo of America at the time, swore that Night Trap would never appear on a Nintendo system, even though none of the Nintendo consoles at the time had the ability to play the game, due to it requiring a CD-ROM.

It took twenty-five years, but the impossible has happened - Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition will be coming to the Nintendo Switch, which will officially end Nintendo's informal boycott of the game.

Night Trap was an early FMV game that essentially acted as an interactive B-movie. You played as a security guard who was monitoring a house that was being attacked by vampires and their minions. It was up to you to switch between the different security cameras and activate all of the traps on time, in order to protect the residents from harm.

Night Trap was considered controversial at the time, due to its perceived high level of violence. The game is also remembered for starring Dana Plato, who had previously been known for family-friendly roles, such as in the TV show Diff'rent Strokes.

Mortal Kombat and Night Trap were the two games that were responsible for creating the ESRB, with Night Trap being one of the first games to receive an M-rating by the board.

That would have been the end of the story of Night Trap, had the game not returned in recent years. The original source code of the game had been lost, but copies of the master footage of the FMV scenes still exist, which meant that it was possible to make a remastered version of the game from scratch, with higher-quality audio and visuals. This led to the creation of Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition, which has since been given a T-rating by the ESRB.

Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition was developed by Screaming Villains, with the physical publishing being handled by Little Run Games. The game is currently available on PlayStation 4, Steam, and Xbox One.

The fact that Night Trap is appearing on the Nintendo Switch also means that Dana Plato has a chance of being added to the next Super Smash Bros. game as a DLC character.

Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch during the Summer.
