Popular Fortnite streamer Ninja recently hinted that a new map is coming to the game, and while that is sort of true, it's not exactly what it sounds like.
The Battle Royale boom we are currently in the midst of in the gaming world is pretty fascinating. The premise is so simple, yet we as gamers don't seem to be able to get enough of them. Take Fortnite, for instance. One map, 100 players, and in 2018 its developers Epic Games reportedly made $2.4 billion profit.
We are not saying Epic's job is easy, not by a long shot. Those of you who play the game know as well as we do how much work goes into making it feel fresh. Just last week we ushered in Season 8 and with it, some of the biggest changes to the map we have seen so far. The addition of a giant volcano as well as a few other brand new locations.
However, Fortnite still relies on just one map and technically, it has been the same map since day one. Fortnite streamer Ninja recently hinted that Epic is about to add an entirely new map to the game. Later this month, the famous gamer will appear at a Samsung event. As reported by Fortnite Intel, Ninja said that a map "literally built for this event" will be unveiled.
Exciting stuff, if it were what it appears to be on the surface. Sadly, Samsung has since confirmed that Ninja misspoke. There will be somewhere new for Fortnite players to ply their trade unveiled at the Samsung event, but it will not be a brand new map. Just a new Creative Island. Still exciting, but not on the scale of having a whole new island to come to grips with.
Epic definitely has a formula when it comes to tweaking Fortnite and keeping it popular, and it is a formula that works. While some of the wholesale changes made for Season 8 feel like a kneejerk reaction to the popularity of Apex Legends, adding a brand new map would feel like a panicked move. Epic knows that it doesn't need two maps. You never know what the future of Fortnite might bring, though.
