Nintendo just dropped a surprise update for its dead console, the 3DS, and everyone hates it. Despite the eShop now being shut down, removing any way to legitimately buy new games for the platform, the latest firmware update stops users from hacking the console, making it able to run pirated games.

This would be an understandable move for a console that's still being supported by Nintendo, but it isn't. While you can still legitimately purchase physical copies of some 3DS games from Nintendo, many third-party and digital-only titles were lost when the eShop shut down in March. Now, this update only makes it harder to preserve these games, unless fans want to go through scalpers.

Nintendo fans noticed this earlier today, spreading the news online to warn others not to download the latest update if they haven't hacked their 3DS yet. A fix is expected eventually, but that will take some time, as modders will have to find a way around these new measures.

As many fans are pointing out, there's actually very little reason to even bother updating your 3DS anymore. The main appeal for many would have been accessing the eShop to purchase games and downloadable content, which you obviously can't do anymore. Some recommend that your avoid firmware updates altogether now, in case you want to play a 3DS game that can't be purchased without going through scalpers. Or in the case of digital-only titles, can't be purchased at all.

Those of you who have already hacked your consoles are fine to update. That's if you even wanted to in the first place, for whatever reason.

It isn't really clear why Nintendo decided to roll out an update for a console it isn't supporting anymore. According to a dataminer, the update made changes to system settings, the internet browser, the home menu, and even the defunct storefront. With this in mind, it definitely seems that it was targeting piracy, although this hasn't been confirmed by Nintendo.

In any case, the latest development has only served to frustrate many Nintendo fans even further. 3DS players were already upset to see the eShop taken offline this year, so the company seemingly coming after one of the remaining ways to play 3DS games has hardly endeared itself to the community. It remains to be seen how long the 3DS will receive such updates.
