The producer for Super Mario Odyssey has confirmed that Toad’s head is actually not a hat—it’s his weird frickin’ head.

There has been an ongoing debate in the world of Nintendo as to what the frick is going on with Toad. We get that he comes from a world called the Mushroom Kingdom, and he may, in fact, have 95 percent of the same DNA as a fungus. Yet, to be quite frank, most of us looked at that head and just thought he was wearing a silly hat. It was a cultural thing, like how most Sikh men wear turbans, or how ancient Japanese warriors all wore kimonos. It’s not racism, it’s just what they wear.

But now Yoshiaki Koizumi, producer for Super Mario Odyssey, has come out on YouTube to tell us all the awful truth.

"So that, as it turns out.... is actually Toad's head," he says in a quiet voice, revealing the untold terror he’s kept in his heart for many years.

He goes on to explain that he’s never really discovered the depth of mysteries that reside inside Toad’s head, and that there could, in fact, be more to the fungal form of his cranium. "I'm going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there's something inside…”

The news may come as vindication to Team Weird Head, who has always maintained that Toad’s head was reflective of his mushroom heritage, but the words of Koizumi are directly contradictory to the 1980s Saturday morning cartoon classic, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! In one episode of the show, Toad takes off his mushroom hat to reveal a Homer Simpson-like bald head, thus proving once and for all the true nature of Toad’s skull.

That wasn’t the only controversial topic that Koizumi discussed. He also tackled the thorny topic of Mario’s belly button, or lack thereof, despite the fact that Mario has quite prominent nipples in Odyssey.

"Well, to be perfectly honest, I didn't really expect that to be a topic among fans,” Koizumi admits. “Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario's belly button it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side."

So, next game we’ll have a Toad brain surgery to settle the question once and for all, as well as Mario with a belly button. The best Mario game is just around the corner.
