Nintendo has confirmed that their beloved Italian plumber will be returning to the big screen.

Remember the original Super Mario Bros. movie? Remember how bad it was? And how Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo had absolutely no chemistry and Mario and Luigi weren’t even brothers?

Well, Nintendo is doing it again, only this time it’ll be all done in CG.

Nintendo announced Thursday that they’ll be partnering with Illumination Entertainment, the same guys behind the Despicable Me and Minions movies, to once again bring Mario to the big screen. Only this time he’ll retain his shape from Super Mario Odyssey. Hopefully.

Mario creator and Nintendo Representative Shigeru Miyamoto is listed as one producer, while Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri is listed as the other.

There’s no release date yet and no word on who will play the voice of Mario, although it really should remain Charles Martinet, the long-time Mario voice actor. Much like replacing Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter with some Hollywood schmuck, tossing Charles-Martinet for an equally schmucky Hollywood type would be a disastrous move.

The announcement confirms earlier reports that Nintendo and Universal Studios were in talks to create a Mario movie. At the time there were very few details, but now that we know it’s going to be an all CG movie there’s reason to hope.

The movie will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.

“With this project, Nintendo will pursue its goals of effectively leveraging its intellectual properties in mediums outside of video games and of bringing smiles to people around the world,” said Nintendo in their statement.

“With this project, Illumination will continue to fulfill its mission of infusing joy and discovery into every property, allowing worldwide audiences of all ages to connect with the beloved characters and story from one of the world's most popular franchises.”

Along with the new movie, Universal Pictures will be bringing a Nintendo theme park to their Universal Studios amusement parks around the world. The first Nintendo Land park is set to open at Universal Studios Osaka in 2020.
