A Nintendo Direct was supposedly announced today, but unfortunately, it is fake. The video game giant has been frustratingly quiet for many fans. Last month, Nintendo put out a roadmap for upcoming titles, but has remained tight-lipped about new announcements.

Let's face facts. There is nothing video game-related that gets people excited quite like a Nintendo Direct. It's in these videos where all the big Nintendo announcements are released. New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character? A sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? These announcements and more were revealed during Directs. The company typically has a Direct early in the year to set the stage for what's to come, but that hasn't happened in 2020 yet.

Interestingly, last month, Nintendo did a Pokémon Direct, as well as a Smash Bros.-centered one. But, there is no general Direct yet, despite already entering mid-February. Hopes and dreams were seemingly answered today, but it's actually a mean-spirited (though admittedly clever) trick.

Today, a Twitter account calling itself "Nintendo Of America" announced a Direct was coming tomorrow. Just about everything seemed legitimate. The reveal's wording was exactly the way Nintendo types, and there would surely be information regarding Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Check out the Tweet below, and see if you can spot what's wrong.

See it? The Twitter account is spelled "@NintwndoAmerica." Since the real Nintendo account is already "@NintendoAmerica" the fake account couldn't go all the way. Also, the real account is "Nintendo of America," not "Nintendo Of America." It's clever because people scrolling would be too busy seeing everything else to notice. Whoever created this joke certainly succeeded; it has fooled a number of individuals and has been retweeted thousands of times already.

It's not hard to see why this fake tweet is making the rounds. Fans are starved for Nintendo announcements. Twitter is full of speculation about when the next Nintendo Direct could be. Aside from New Horizons, there are not many new Nintendo Switch exclusives confirmed for release in 2020.  Nintendo is definitely aware, and hopefully prepping a big Direct for release soon.
