Between the dates of September 21 and 27, Nintendo absolutely dominated the sales charts in Japan. According to the latest Famitsu report, nine of the top ten games were all Switch titles. The only non-Nintendo game on the list was eFootball Winning Eleven 2021 Season Update on PS4, clocking in at number five on the list.

Not surprisingly, Super Mario 3D All-Stars claimed the top spot. Released a few weeks ago with a rapid marketing blitz – and timed availability – the title sold an estimated 63,803 copies during the week of September 21. Animal Crossing: New Horizons took the number two slot with 29,829 copies sold – more than 30,000 less than 3D All-Stars.

Here is the full list (courtesy of Nintendo Life), followed by estimated units sold throughout the week:

  1. Super Mario 3D All-Stars (63,803) | Nintendo Switch
  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (29,829) | Nintendo Switch
  3. Ring Fit Adventure (25,915) | Nintendo Switch
  4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (13,470) | Nintendo Switch
  5. eFootball Winning Eleven 2021 Season Update (9,781) | PlayStation 4
  6. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (9,583) | Nintendo Switch
  7. Pokemon Sword and Shield (7,019) | Nintendo Switch
  8. Minecraft (6,979) | Nintendo Switch
  9. Splatoon 2 (6,329) | Nintendo Switch
  10. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (6,151) | Nintendo Switch

What's most incredible about the list is how old some of the games are. Smash Bros. Ultimate released back in 2018, and Splatoon 2 is even older – releasing in July 2017, yet still hitting the top ten. There's no denying Nintendo's popularity in its home country, although part of the impressive numbers might be due to the next generation of consoles looming in the near future.

Nowhere is that idea clearer than in console sales. The same week that saw Nintendo dominate game sales also saw the Switch outperform every other system on the market. After all, not many people are buying an Xbox One or PS4 with the Series X and PS5 just over a month away.

  1. Nintendo Switch (42,111)
  2. Nintendo Switch Lite (28,431)
  3. New Nintendo 2DS LL (3,774)
  4. PlayStation 4 (2,473)
  5. PlayStation 4 Pro (481)
  6. New Nintendo DS (54)
  7. Xbox One S (14)
  8. Xbox One X (15)

Nintendo will have a real challenge later in November, when both Microsoft and Sony unleased their new consoles. The Xbox Series X releases November 10, and the PlayStation 5 will follow a few days later on November 12.
