Nintendo has big plans for this year's E3. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch will take center stage, and there will even be an invitational tournament for the upcoming fighting game. Those hoping to hear about game releases post 2018 will be disappointed however, because the company will only focus on games coming out in the near future, according to Nintendo's official press release.

Nintendo: "Nintendo is returning to the E3 video game trade show in June with fan-favorite activities and new features to keep watchers around the world and attendees in Los Angeles engaged and having fun. As in recent years, Nintendo will focus its E3 activities on games coming soon, with a special spotlight given to a key headlining title: the recently announced Super Smash Bros. game coming to the Nintendo Switch system this year. Games launching beyond 2018 will be featured at a later date."

It is disappointing that it seems like there won't be any major announcements. Last year at E3, Nintendo showcased a big video presentation, unveiling Switch titles like Metroid Prime 4, Yoshi, and a Pokémon RPG. Yoshi is scheduled to release this year, so it is possible in Nintendo's 2018 E3 video presentation that we will get some concrete information, such as a specific release date and new gameplay mechanics. Metroid Prime 4, arguably the most anticipated Switch game aside from Super Smash Bros., has no scheduled release date. In Nintendo's recent financial earnings report, the company listed "Pokémon RPG for Nintendo Switch" (a temporary title) as coming out "2018 or later." While it appears unlikely we'll get information on Metroid Prime 4 (unless Nintendo surprises fans with a release date), maybe there will be some information on the Pokémon RPG.

For many however, Super Smash Bros. is reason enough to be hyped for Nintendo's presence at E3. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U released in 2014, and was critically acclaimed. It was arguably the ultimate combination of Brawl's slower, causal-friendly gameplay, and Melee's complex, high-octane gameplay. With the Switch game coming out this year, that makes it just a four year gap between the games, the shortest since the GameCube. (Melee was released just two years after Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64. Meanwhile, Brawl was released seven years after Melee, and Smash for Wii U was released six years after Brawl.)

Super Smash Bros. isn't the only Nintendo game with a huge E3 presence. The Splatoon 2 World Championship will take place June 11-12. This year's E3 will certainly be extra fun for competitive gamers.

This should prove to be a notable E3 for Nintendo enthusiasts, despite the lack of discussion of game releases in post 2018. With Smash Bros. releasing this year, it is possible that Nintendo will unveil some newcomers for the game at the event. We already know an Inkling from Splatoon has made it, and that Link will be sporting his Breath of the Wild outfit. Fans will no doubt enjoy discussing which characters should make the cut. Nintendo's activities at E3 will be held June 11-14.
