Splatoon 2 really is one of Nintendo’s hottest Switch properties right now. The question is, what are they cooking up next? As E3 approaches, they promise a Splatoon-related announcement that will truly shock us.

Splatoon 2 is clearly a major player in Nintendo’s competitive arsenal. As they gear up for the release of their much-ballyhooed online play subscription program (concrete details of which were finally confirmed earlier this week), they’re going to need to promote the titles that are big on… well, online play. Splatoon 2 is one of these, and the game’s support has really ramped up of late.

Not only was there a substantial update late last month, but paid DLC is also on the way this summer. That’ll take the form of the Octo Expansion, an extensive single-player campaign. Further, even as we speak, there’s a new tournament-style Splatfest underway, to determine which is the best of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In short, Splatoon is clearly a huge deal in Nintendo’s eyes. The big question is:

What’s this shocking Splatoon-related mystery they’ve been secretly working on?

Nintendo Will 'Shock The World' With Splatoon News Ahead Of E3
Via: Game

As Siliconera reports, Nintendo made a very cryptic announcement in this week’s Jump magazine. On June 9, we’re told, they’re going to share some Splatoon news that will ‘shock the world.’ That’s all we know for now, other than the fact that this is something that the team have been working away on in secret.

What could this possibly mean? For one thing, it bears mentioning that they didn’t specify Splatoon 2. This could be a suggestion of a sequel, or something of that nature. Maybe a more standard team battle sort of mode, a concept that has long divided the Splatoon community. Some think more conventional modes like free-for-alls would be welcome, while others feel that this would sully Splatoon’s unique nature.

They key to this announcement is probably the wording and the timing of it. Just how special is this going to be, exactly, to ‘shock the world?’ This wild world of ours doesn’t shock easily any more, after all. Let’s also remember that this reveal, whatever form it takes, is happening just two days before the big E3 2018 Splatoon 2 World Tournament. Could that be a significant factor too?

One thing’s for certain: fans of Nintendo’s quirky squid-centric shooter are going to be waiting with bated breath for June 9.
