In a move no one saw coming, it looks like Nintendo is discontinuing the very vibrant red, the classic soft grey, and the neon yellow version of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. The colors are still available for custom Nintendo Switch bundles, and there is no clear answer for how soon they will be unavailable — or how difficult it will be to obtain the discontinued Joy-Cons.

If you are unable to get a hold of these retired colors and desperately want them, there are some do it yourself options to change the color and appearance of your Joy-Cons. There are stores, like many of the crafty Etsy sellers, who create new plastic shells for Joy-Cons. Be careful to read reviews and vet where you order your Joy-Con shells from, because poorly or incorrectly made shells can lead to warping. If the plastic edges don't properly form a tight seal, the Joy-Con is more prone to damage from small foreign particles entering the device.

Tom from IGN has a great tutorial showing how to replace the original Joy-Con shell. As he warns, there is a high risk of damage, and on his first try he himself stripped a screw and was unable to finish his work.

Since removing the plastic casing to replace the shell involves lots of small screws, and the not-insignificant chance of ruining internal mechanisms of your joy-con, sticker decals can be a much safer and easier way to go. There are so many artists who create beautiful work like Decal Girl or Unichameleon on Etsy.

If you are artistically inclined, or can't seam to find the perfect design, you can even try to create your own decals from adhesive vinyls as IndogoCharge shows in this video. Fair warning — it is not an easy process.

In the end, what your controllers look like are not going to affect your gameplay. If you like the idea of having  your video game console double as an accessory, the Switch Lite might be a better fit as they come is pastel colors.
