In June, current Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima will be formally stepping down in favor of Shuntaro Furukawa. Furukawa will be the sixth president of the company, and he looks to have big plans. In an interview with Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Furukawa outlined some of his goals for Nintendo, with an emphasis on mobile gaming.

Furukawa: "From what I can see, smartphone games are the ones I want to expand the most,"

Furukawa's goal is to make Nintendo's smartphone software operations into a "$910 million business," according to Nikkei. The newspaper also states that Furukawa wishes to release the Switch in more markets, with an emphasis in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

According to Nikkei, Furukawa plans to create a decision-making panel of five directors, himself included.

Furukawa: "Other people are gifted at evaluating products," "Making the final call on whether or not something makes sense is my responsibility."

As to why Furukawa was chosen for the president's chair, Kimishima states that Furukawa "knows how to draw out the potential from development teams, and over the past two years he has created the business foundation for the next generation."

In another interview (that is certainly worth reading through) with investors, Furukawa highlighted vital goals he will be pursuing, reiterating the Switch's momentum, and seeing if the smartphone business can become a larger part of Nintendo's general business. In the quote below, he talks about other pursuits, including the upcoming theme park and even films.

Furukukawa: "I am also looking at the topic of the yet-to-be-realized theme park and movie projects that that are part of our strategy of expanding the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP (intellectual property), and how we can lay down new pathways that positively enhance our dedicated video game platform business."

It is very interesting to see how determined Furukawa is to make Nintendo's smartphone applications a success. It was only recently that the company began to look into this area of entertainment. So far, Nintendo has yet to achieve maximum success. Miitomo is shutting down on May 9th, after two years. In March, 2017, Kimishima told Nikkei that Super Mario Run "did not meet our expectations" in terms of revenue gained. Nintendo released two other mobile games, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Heroes has done well at the very least. Nintendo will be releasing two more mobile games in the near future. There is Mario Kart Tour, and an RPG called Dragalia Lost, which is being released (first in other areas, then later in North America and Europe, according to Nintendo) in partnership with Cygames. Time will tell if Furukawa is able to replicate Nintendo's console success on the smartphone.

It is also interesting that Furukawa mentions "movie projects." We already know that a theatrical Super Mario film from Illumination Entertainment is coming, but what else? It is certainly quite the time to be a Nintendo enthusiast, as the company is going through changes, with what looks to be big things on the way.
