While Nintendo admits to seeing the benefits of nostalgia and remaking some of its most popular games, the company has recently said that it wants to move forward with an ongoing emphasis on creating new player experiences. However, the overwhelming success of recent remakes means that future projects are certainly viable.

In a recent Nintendo investor Q&A session, the company was asked about the potential for future remakes based on the strong performance of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa responded with a two-part answer, stating first that, “We don’t have a define policy to continuously release more remakes in future.” Shuntaro then added a caveat since there are many outstanding titles that players love that a younger generation has yet to experience,

“On the other hand, the titles we’ve developed over our past 30 years in the dedicated video game system business have been played by and fondly remembered by many people, and these are an important asset to Nintendo as well. Nostalgia can be very appealing, but it’s more important to be able to create new game experiences and fun, etc., even within remakes of classic titles. And I think that the most important factor is whether the developers are passionate about wanting to remake a game. A good recent example of this is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, as you mentioned. Consumers all over the world responded positively to both its nostalgic elements and new features.”

The statement should not come as a surprise, for although Nintendo often favors the creation of new and interesting ideas for its most popular game series, the commercial and critical success of both those mentioned games cannot be ignored. Not only to new generations and older ones get to experience a modern take on classic games, the strong financial performance is a major bonus as well.

Most developers seem keen to reach into their own catalogs of older games to remake and reignite faded interest. Of course, the results vary from game to game. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a recent example of an almost identical remake to the original that has received overall praise, while the MediEvil remake appears to be suffering in reception as it too is almost identical to the original game, which appears not to work in with today’s consumers.

Interestingly, Nintendo’s stance of wanting to make new experiences rather than remake old games is precisely what the video game industry needs. A reliance on remaking old content a sure way to become stale and is the same problem that plagues Hollywood right now in the creation of films. Franchise films and reboot after reboot may be safe in terms of financial projections, but they offer little in the form of creativity and new ways of thinking.

Still, seeing Link’s Awakening on the Nintendo Switch was nothing short of fantastic, so perhaps there is room for a blend of old and new.
