The most unusual character to ever be added to a Super Smash Bros. game has to be Bayonetta. She was the final DLC character released for Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, which came as a shock to many, due to the adult content of her games. The reason Bayonetta made her way to Smash Bros. is because Nintendo was responsible for saving her series.

The first Bayonetta game was highly acclaimed across the world, despite the concerns from some gamers about the over-sexualization of the titular character. Bayonetta was the twelfth game to ever receive a perfect score in Famitsu magazine, with many other gaming publications showering praise upon the game's tight controls, exciting fight scenes, and unique aesthetic. It seemed as if a sequel to Bayonetta was inevitable.

Bayonetta was developed by Platinum Games and published by Sega. Work on Bayonetta 2 was originally started with Sega also on board to finance the development of the game and act as the publisher once more. As time went on; news began to leak out that development on Bayonetta 2 halted and that the game was canceled.

Hideki Kamiya has since revealed that Sega stopped funding the game, due to issues within their own company. This left Platinum Games with a half-finished title and no way to complete it. They shopped Bayonetta 2 around to different publishers, with seemingly no interest.

Nintendo was the company that finally stepped in and saved the game. They agreed to finance the development of Bayonetta 2 and act as the publisher, so long as the game became a Wii U exclusive. This decision initially caused outrage among fans of the series, as the first Bayonetta title originally only appeared on non-Nintendo systems. Hideki Kamiya's response was to tell fans that Bayonetta 2 wouldn't even exist without the help of Nintendo, which is why it remained exclusive to their systems. Bayonetta 2 would go on to become one of the biggest third-party exclusives for the Wii U.

Bayonetta 2 was met with glowing reviews, many of which claimed that the game was even better than its predecessor. This critical acclaim was not met with amazing sales, as Bayonetta 2 failed to sell over a million units on the Wii U.

It seems that Nintendo fans hasn't forgotten about the Umbra Witch though. Bayonetta was the #1 worldwide choice during the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, which was an online vote to determine the next character added to Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U as DLC. Bayonetta would go on to become one of the most popular characters to be used in Smash Bros. tournaments, though this might be due how overpowered she was compared to everyone else, save for Cloud Strife and Diddy Kong.

Platinum Games' relationship with Nintendo is continuing into the Switch era, as Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 are coming to the Nintendo Switch. Initial reports concerning the Switch version of these games suggests that the superior hardware of the system has helped to iron out the technical issues that were present in both Bayonetta titles. The amazing success of the Nintendo Switch during its first year also means that Bayonetta 2 now has a chance to reach a much wider audience and can now become the success that it so rightly deserves to be.

Not only will players have a chance to get their hands on these two cult classic titles, but at the 2017 Video Game Awards, Nintendo revealed the Switch will receive Bayonetta 3, giving players am all new entry in the series. Given the insane attach rate for Nintendo Switch titles and the polished quality of the Bayonetta titles, this could be the spotlight the series needs to finally break through and be a heavy hitter.

Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on Feb 16, 2018, with a third entry in the series expected sometime in the Switch's lifecycle.
