Streaming presentations in the gaming industry are always exciting events. Aside from events like E3 and Comic-Con, these are the few occasions gamers get to see what's in store for their favorite platform. Yet, the excitement generated by these presentations, often called directs, boils down to the content presented. That content need not entail ported games.

Nintendo Loves Switch Ports

Look at Nintendo, which has built a successful streaming presentation model with the Nintendo Direct. Its most exciting Directs have been ones that offer closer looks at upcoming brand-new games. For example, the Super Mario Maker 2The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and Luigi's Mansion 3 Directs were all great because they gave brief but detailed overviews on what to expect in those games. Yet, announcing ports like that of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 in a Nintendo Direct hardly generates excitement because these games were released a long time ago and, furthermore, have received ports on other systems already. In other words, they are lulls in what are otherwise generally exciting presentations.

Stadia Needs More Than Ports

While many are excited for or otherwise curious about Google Stadia, Google's original presentation for the Stadia was incredibly port-heavy. Showing off ports for games like Destiny 2 and The Division 2, the Google Stadia was not presented as a platform with a unique library. Rather, its uniqueness was derived from its emphasis on streaming titles, many of which have been released already.

A later Google Stadia Connect at Gamescom demonstrated games that have been out for a while at this point. This live stream included titles like Mortal Kombat 11, Borderlands 3, Doom Eternal, GRID, and The Elder Scrolls Online. All of these will have been out for quite some time by Stadia's release, so the games hardly seem like the platform's biggest selling point.

Overall, companies need to learn that ports don't make for exciting Direct content. Perhaps they believe that revealing ports will convince gamers to buy their platforms on the grounds of having an equal experience on a system with exclusive functionalities (e.g. streaming games). However, what will ultimately help sell the platform is all that the hardware has to offer and what exclusive titles are offered on the platform in question.
