One of the strongest attributes of the Switch is its emphasis on enjoyable, easy-to-grasp local co-op games. Not only are there quite a few multiplayer experiences to enjoy with a number of friends, family, or strangers online, but there are plenty of titles that thrive on just 2 players teaming up. Indeed, Switch makes for a particularly appealing console for gamers with spouses wanting to join forces and get in on the virtual fun.

From short gaming romps that allow you and your partner to kick back and have a few laughs, to more serious, epic 2 player adventures, there is no shortage of options.

With the massive amount of software now being cranked out for Nintendo's console, it can be tough to sift through it all and pinpoint some of the most fun and effective games to enjoy with your significant other. That's where we come in. We'll seek to cover what we feel are the strongest examples of enjoyable, well-crafted games that revolve around - or are enhanced by - 2 player co-op and teamwork.

Updated 2nd March, 2020 By Helen Ashcroft: As the Switch grows in popularity its games catalog is also increasing in size. Co-op games just keep coming and are proving to be some of the console's biggest hits. With the release of the Switch lite, co-op lovers also have more options than ever before when it comes to playing together.

Regardless of if you are playing locally with joy-cons or linking together consoles, we've added some more games onto this list, both new and old so you can enjoy even more gaming action, together.

15 Wargroove

This turn-based tactical game was recently released for the Switch and sees players take control of one of 15 commanders. Each choice comes with a unique set of campaigns and objectives. The game was very well received and has been likened to old school classic Nintendo Wars.

The co-op mode can pit players against each other in a versus mode or allow them to work together in campaigns. There are even campaign editing tools so you can truly personalize your experience.

14 Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is one of the strongest titles in the franchise. It has a huge amount of content, great visuals, impressive level design, and is enjoyable to play. In terms of co-op play, the greatest thing is that extra players can dip in and out easily. This means that a partner who only wants to briefly join in can simply dip out when they want, without the other player needing to quit.

As well as playing co-op through the main game, there's also a local multiplayer football game called Kung Foot which pits you against each other.

13 Death Squared

Blue, red, green, and yellow robots on platforms with different colored paths

Death Squared is a fiendishly difficult puzzle game that sees players working together to guide robots towards their goals. While it can be played solo, the game is best enjoyed in cooperative mode.

There is a story mode, a 4 player battle mode and also a vault mode. The vault mode is not for the fainthearted and is sure to test your puzzle-solving skills and your relationship.

12 Enter The Gungeon

This roguelike bullet hell has procedurally generated levels and is a fast-paced experience, sure to bring both chaos and adventure to your life. Adding a second player will bring your total party to 5, ensuring lots of guns and lots of Gungeon fun.

For those who enjoy the title, keep an eye out for the spin-off Exit The Gungeon, which is set to come to consoles in the Spring of 2020 and has similar mechanics. The main difference is that it takes a platform approach, rather than being a top-down dungeon crawler.

11 Towerfall

Towerfall combines archery combat games Ascension and Dark World and adds in some Switch exclusives. The title is inspired by past couch co-op titles and as such its party mode is incredibly enjoyable to play.

This is a perfect example of simple to play, difficult to master meaning your co-operative games can get very competitive as you fight off monsters and master the different gameplay types.

10 39 Days To Mars

One of the most innovative and charming co-op games to ever fall under the radar, 39 Days to Mars almost feels like a virtual trial in communication and synchronization more than a game.

This cute, quirky little puzzler requires you and a partner to take control of a set of hands as the two of you work through a myriad of brain-busters during a 2-3 hours campaign. These puzzlers are super creative and often wacky - ranging from guiding electrical currents by flipping switches to tinkering with locks, to maneuvering keys through obstacles. 39 Days to Mars really brings new meaning to "cooperative" gameplay, as its multitasking almost requires it.

9 Cuphead

When it comes to sidescrolling shooters, it's tough to find a game as simultaneously fun and frustratingly hard as Cuphead. This is all the more reason for you and your partner to join forces and power your way through the array of insane cartoony foes and bosses together.

The simultaneous co-op is really well executed here, assuming you can hang with the added chaos packed onto the somewhat small space on-screen. Still, the added firepower you'll receive, along with the handy teammate revives make up for this, and help make Cuphead an endlessly fun, solid co-op shooter.

8 Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together!

If you and your spouse want a game that stresses cooperation and communication but perhaps seek something more easy-going than the tricky grind of 39 Days to Mars, Snipperclips might be for you.

The game is a heap of fun and a barrel of laughs, with its goofy, simplistic concept revolving around random shapes and objects which can be drawn, cut, and/or manipulated on-screen. While it's a physics-based puzzler at its core, Snipperclips is unique in that it's quite versatile/flexible with its objectives. The result is an innovative puzzle game that relies more on creativity than technicality.

7 Super Mario Maker 2

You may point to NSMB U Deluxe as a contender for a solid local co-op adventure. While this may be true, the endlessly enjoyable Super Mario Maker 2 offers this same familiar, delightful 2D platforming while providing an endless stream of creative content with its user-made levels.

With this juiced-up sequel, players can now have a partner jump into the fray and experience the plethora of colorful and often crazy stages with you. Additionally, the two of you can show off and trade your own stages, offering challenges for them to overcome - and perhaps trolling them in the process with some insanely tough levels.

6 Cadence Of Hyrule - Crypt Of The NecroDancer

Sure, we may not be getting a means of playing simultaneous co-op in a true Zelda game, but this unique twist on the classic fantasy series is an amusing substitute - especially if rhythmic games are your jam.

This musical adventure allows you and a partner to team up as either Link, Princess Zelda, or Cadence, and take out the smattering of monsters to the on-screen rhythmic queues. The added firepower, strategy, and chaos of a second player really adds a new dimension of fun to this already enjoyable journey. After all, dancing is typically more fun with at least two people, is it not?

5 Overcooked 2

Despite this delightful gaming dish being served over a year ago, Overcooked 2 is still one of the freshest, most enjoyable local co-op games on the Switch. With tons of recipes, colorful settings, and changing scenarios to keep you on your toes, you and your partner will find yourselves delving into this delicious party game for hours on end.

Overcooked 2, like some others on our list, really emphasizes talking it out and working together to crank out as many successful food orders as you can within a limited space. Not only does it encourage communication in a huge way, but it's also just a blast to play.

There's even the ability to take your local co-op play online, where you can add another 2 players into the mix - in addition to more productivity and more chaos.

4 Rocket League

When it comes to hitting that "easy to learn, tough to master" quality that often makes for a terrific game, Rocket League nails it. The result is one of the more enduring and addictive multiplayer games of the last decade. While you can certainly have a blast rocking Rocket League solo, having a racing companion by your side injects even more fun and effectiveness. The two of you can coordinate strategies and mount offensives together.

As solid team play is usually crucial for success, and typically consists of just 2 or 3 players, Rocket League makes for a great local co-op game for dynamic duos.

3 Diablo 3: Eternal Edition

One of the most captivating and in-depth co-op games on Switch has to be this classic dungeon crawler from Blizzard, Diablo 3. The Switch version, in particular, truly sweetens the deal with its smooth implementation of couch co-op, and the Eternal Edition offers even more content to the already robust gameplay.

Traversing the vast, rich dungeons, caverns, and outdoor lands of Diablo 3 while slaying hordes of foes is more fun than ever with another player at your side. Not only does it help quite a bit with the extra firepower, but two players can also complement one another by allocating tasks (like magic, healing, close-combat, etc).

2 Super Mario Party

While the Mario Party series has typically been known for its strength as a super fun competitive multiplayer game, the latest sequel on Switch also thrives in the co-op department.

Between the team face-offs in board games, the exciting 2-vs-2 minigames, and the addition of 10 fun co-op games, you and your partner can now enjoy Mario Party together without getting into fights. The easy-going nature combined with the plethora of entertaining content makes Super Mario Party an enduring co-op romp.

1 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Much like our prior entry, Nintendo's latest version of Smash Bros is stronger than ever - thanks in part to the inclusion of more actual co-op features.

While you, unfortunately, can't enjoy the epic World of Light campaign together, you and your significant other can team up to take out AI baddies in the game's rich Classic Mode. You can also have them easily jump into a team battle with you against bots or online opponents, or conquer various challenges together.
