Nintendo has dominated the Japanese sales chart in the week leading up to the holiday season, with 29 of the 30 games belonging to the Switch.

2020 was a huge year for Nintendo in terms of sales. The Switch's hardware and software sales shot through the roof, thanks in no small part to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There is no denying that New Horizons was one of the most important games of 2020, and it's likely to remain in the public consciousness for years to come.

Nintendo has seen incredible success in the face of the new console generation, with the Switch outselling the PS5 during its launch month around the world. The Japanese video game sales figures for the period running from December 14-20 have been released, and the Switch destroyed the competition. According to Famitsu, 29 of the 30 top-selling games in the week before the holiday period were Switch titles.

The #1 game was Momotaro Dentetsu Showa Heisei Reiwa mo Teiban!, which is the latest entry in a popular digital board game series. New Horizons was #2, Ring Fit Adventure was #3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was #4, Pikmin 3 Deluxe was #5, the Switch version of Minecraft was #6, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was #7, Super Mario Party was #8, Super Mario 3D All-Stars was #9, and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics was #10. The only non-Nintendo game to break the top 30 was the PS4 port of Cyberpunk 2077, which reached #28. Cyberpunk 2077 isn't likely to hold that position for long, considering all of the controversies surrounding the game at the moment.

There were worries that the Switch would be left in the dust when the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched, but the sales prove that Nintendo has nothing to worry about. The Switch has dominated the sales charts in Japan throughout the year, and it's set to do the same in 2021. It's now up to Nintendo to maintain this momentum going forward. Microsoft and Sony will eventually resolve their production issues and start churning out console exclusives, and Nintendo needs to be ready for the day when they can start challenging the Switch.
