Industry experts believe the Switch will be Nintendo's final console. Rather than replacing it, it will just release updated and more powerful models, like the iPhone.

It's almost that time again. The beginning of a new generation of console is almost upon us. This November, PlayStation and Xbox will release their new consoles and for the majority of people who can't afford or don't want one of each, a tough decision will need to be made. It's a war that has raged on and taken many forms since the SNES and Sega Genesis went head-to-head.

Nintendo stepped back from the regularly-scheduled console war a long time ago. The stalwart runs on its own schedule and has enjoyed a lot of success by doing that. The Wii became its first home console to surpass 100 million units sold, and the Switch is well on its way to doing the same.

In fact, if predictions by investment firms are anything to go by, the Switch should easily go beyond 100 million units sold. They believe that Nintendo will adopt an iPhone-like model when it comes to the Switch. Rather than release a brand new console six years on from the Switch's release, Nintendo will just offer up a newer more powerful model of the console.

It has already done that in a way via the release of the Switch Lite. Granted, it isn't more powerful, but it is an alternative to a regular Switch. There are also rumors that a Switch Pro will be announced any day now. Nintendo has sort of been leaning into this model for years. It replaced the Game Boy with the Game Boy Color, the DS with the 3DS, and the Wii with the Wii U.

In all of those instances, games made for the first console could be played on the updated version. The only difference with the Switch is it will never be completely replaced. Yes, the original model released in 2017 will eventually become obsolete after enough updated versions have been released, just like no one still uses an original iPhone. If Nintendo is indeed heading down this path, it will never have to start off from square one ever again.
