The Nintendo Switch Online service has gone back to giving two games away in July, which is especially odd, as the subscribers in Japan will also only be receiving two games.
The two games that will be added to Nintendo Switch Online in July are Donkey Kong 3 and Wrecking Crew. Donkey Kong 3 stars a bug exterminator named Stanley who must use his bug spray to push Donkey Kong to the top of the screen or to eliminate all of the insects in the stage. Donkey Kong 3 only has three levels, which loop around when finished.
Wrecking Crew is best-known for inspiring one of the most hated stages in the history of the Super Smash Bros. series. Wrecking Crew was one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System and it stars early versions of Mario and Luigi as they attempt to destroy objects that are scattered around each level. The versions of Mario and Luigi in Wrecking Crew lack the ability to jump, so the player needs to carefully plan their route through the stage.
The Nintendo Switch Online service has generally given away three games every month, with a few unannounced "SP" versions of games that are already on the service, which generally give players all of the items or put them right before an important boss battle. There have been months where the Nintendo fans in Europe and North America only received two games, but that was because the third game was only released in Japan. It's also easy to create a Japanese account and download the Famicom app from the Eshop if players want to try the Japanese games.
The Nintendo Switch Online service is adding a rewind feature on the same day that Donkey Kong 3 and Wrecking Crew will be made available, so it's possible that Nintendo is considering that to be the equivalent to a third game on the roster. The July lineup of titles is pretty poor, even with the addition of the rewind feature, and Nintendo needs to add Super Nintendo titles to the service soon if they want people to renew their subscription in September.
Donkey Kong 3 and Wrecking Crew will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service on July 17, 2019.
