Well, we didn’t exactly expect the moon on a stick with this latest Nintendo Switch hardware update, but this really is uninspiring.

For all intents and purposes, Nintendo Switch is in a great place right now. After the woeful performance of the Wii U, something pretty darn special had to happen here. After around two-and-half years of being on the market, it’s clear that the Switch has accomplished big things. The main Nintendo exclusives are going strong, and the hybrid handheld’s popularity remains solid as a result.

Even more miraculously, third-parties developers actually believe in and support the system too. It’s a haven for indie titles, which tend to perform well even when they’ve been released everywhere else too (never underestimate the draw of portability). Not only that, but heavyweight names like Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have been/are being ported, and the likes of Doom Eternal is coming to the system too. The Switch Lite might have had a bit of a lukewarm reception at this early stage (yep, it seems to have the controller "drift" issue too), but otherwise, the Switch is getting on swimmingly.

Naturally, though, you don’t want to get complacent for a nanosecond in this business. As well as the system has been doing, there’s always more that can be done. A whole lot more, in some areas. Nintendo Switch Online has been controversial since its barebones launch, and while the SNES games were a Baby Mario step in the right direction, the service is definitely lacking. Then there’s the matter of the Switch UI, which is similarly spartan. Couldn’t it add themes or something to brighten up our home screens à la the 3DS? You know, in an update.

Well, sure it could, but not in this update. Nintendo’s teeny console updates that take three seconds to install and offer us more sweet, sweet system stability are infamous, and we’ve got another on our hands right now.

As Nintendo Everything reports, the new version 9.0.1 UI offers more stability, alongside promises that it has “resolved an issue that may have triggered errors during gameplay” and “resolved an issue that may display an instruction to remove the Joy-Con during the initial setup of Nintendo Switch Lite.” That’s about the extent of it. Enjoy your generous bounty of new features, Switch fans.

We’re both excited and terrified to find out just how stable is the Nintendo Switch going to get.
