Skull & Bones, Ubisoft's long-awaited open-world pirate game, is apparently still in development despite the long wait for updates. Confirmation that the game is still coming happened during a conference call held on Wednesday.

While the call focused mostly on the financial aspects of Ubisoft's operations, company representatives confirmed that development of the much-delayed high-seas game is well underway. What's more, Ubisoft expects the game to be released during Fiscal Year 2021.

The mention of Skull & Bones comes as something of a surprise to gamers, who haven't heard a peep from Ubisoft about the upcoming title in years. In fact, the most recent information we have comes from an unconfirmed rumor about the title being completely reworked as a live service.

Unfortunately, there were no details about what form the game will take upon its release, and no mention of the live service rumor that has been spreading.

Skull & Bones was announced in 2017, four years after the release of the pirate-themed Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. Unfortunately, while there have been promises for releases and beta tests as far back as 2018, nothing officially materialized, despite a gameplay trailer being released during E3 that year.

In the meantime, Rare released the multiplayer pirate game Sea of Thieves. Although the game has received mixed reviews, it's scratched the pirate-themed itch of many sea-loving gamers.

But many still want to see Ubisoft throw their pirate hat into the ring, since the nautical segments in Black Flag were well-received by players and critics alike. Memories of the game has left many gamers hoping to see what an assassin-free pirate game would look like coming from Ubisoft.

If Skull & Bones does indeed release in 2021 as planned, there are plenty of players waiting to see the result.
