There will be no zombies mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Some of you might be a little sad to hear that Call of Duty is abandoning its zombies gameplay, at least for its most recent entry. According to a new interview with Campaign Gameplay Director Jacob Minkoff, Modern Warfare’s gritty realism just didn’t lend itself to a zombie sideshow.

Minkoff sat down to talk with PlayStation Lifestyle recently about the upcoming soft reboot or the Modern Warfare franchise. He compared the reborn Modern Warfare to Treyarch Games’ Black Ops III, noting that Infinity Ward was going for a very different style in their Call of Duty game.

“Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, they can have the much more ‘out there’ different types of gameplay in their games,” Minkoff explained. “But for us, we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.”

That’s not to say that Minkoff didn’t like Treyarch’s zombies--it just didn’t fit.

Also spoken of was Modern Warfare’s new contiguous player progression. In Black Ops III, players had a multiplayer and a single-player character progression, with the two having nothing in common. In Modern Warfare, there will be only a single character to progress, whether you’re playing the single-player campaign, multiplayer, or the new co-op campaign.

We don’t know much about the co-op campaign, but Minkoff said it would tie-in directly to the single-player campaign.

“We’re not ready to talk about cooperative play yet, but what I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop. The events just continue. So those elements--gameplay, progression, story--they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download.”

And before we forget, Modern Warfare will also have full crossplay between all consoles and PC players.

Modern Warfare drops on October 25th, with more details to come at this year’s E3 presentations.
